Inside a Cartridge — Coils, Wicks and Ceramic

Cartridge internals differ more than the outside suggests, and the differences explain most performance complaints.

Cartridges look interchangeable. A glass tank, a metal base, a mouthpiece. Inside, the heating assembly varies enough to change how the same oil performs.

The two dominant designs

Older cartridges use a wrapped wire coil around a silica or cotton wick. Newer ones use a porous ceramic element that acts as both wick and heater. Both work; they fail differently.

Wick designs are cheap and tolerant of thin oil. Ceramic handles thick oil better and generally tastes cleaner, because there is no cotton to scorch. A mfused cartridge and a dompen cartridge built on different internals will behave differently on the same battery.

Porosity is the specification nobody publishes

Ceramic elements vary in pore size, and pore size determines how fast oil moves. A ceramic tuned for thick diamond fills will starve on thin distillate; one tuned for distillate floods with anything viscous.

Manufacturers rarely state this, which is why the same oil can perform differently across two cartridges that look identical. It is a real engineering variable hidden behind identical exteriors.

Intake holes decide flow

At the base of the tank are small holes feeding oil to the element. Their size is matched to the intended viscosity — larger for thick oil, smaller for thin.

Mismatch produces the two classic faults. Too small for the oil and it starves, giving a burnt taste. Too large and it floods, giving gurgling and leaks. Neither means a tre house cartridge or a strane cartridge is defective; it means the fill and the hardware were matched imperfectly.

Materials matter for what they do not do

Glass tanks are inert. Some cheaper cartridges use plastic, which can interact with terpenes over time and alter flavour. Metal components matter because heavy metals can migrate into oil from poorly made parts — this is precisely why several states require metals screening on vape products specifically.

Reputable hardware uses medical-grade stainless or similar for anything touching oil. It is not something you can inspect visually, which is why a producer who names their hardware supplier is giving you real information.

Airflow and draw resistance

How tight a cartridge draws is a design decision, not a fault. Tighter draws suit smaller inhalations; looser ones suit larger. Personal preference decides which is better.

A restrictive high supply cartridge or joos cartridge is not underperforming — it is tuned differently. If it genuinely will not draw, check for a blockage in the mouthpiece before concluding anything else.

What this means in practice

You cannot see any of this from the outside, so the practical approach is empirical: find a battery setting that suits the cartridges you buy most, and change one variable at a time when something misbehaves.

And when a mitten extracts cart, a good news cartridge, a society c cart or a papa's herb cartridge performs differently on the same pen, internals are the most likely explanation — not oil quality.
